Bio-Availability - Why Vitamin Supplements are Not All the Same

A Healthy body requires a diet containing all the raw materials necessary for renewing it's cells. Tomorrow you will have 50 million different skin cells and in a week your whole intestinal mucous membrane will have been replaced.

Natural Vitamin Supplement

Unlike a car, the body renews itself every minute and needs the right fuel to do so. It is now acknowledged that many diseases are connected to diet and lifestyle and so people are taking an increased interest in nutritional research.

o If not exercised muscle is replaced by fat, physical inactivity results in our bones losing both strength and calcium.

o Mental activity slows down if intellectual faculties are not maintained

o The aging process is under way.

Today we know that diet and exercise, stress and smoking are factors that greatly influence our health. To withstand premature wear and tear and fight illness it is important that the body receives the necessary vitamins and minerals, trace elements, enzymes and essential fatty and amino acids. If we can't get them all in our food then we should be taking supplements
Biochemists have shown in recent years that prescription medicines help as far as symptoms of illness are concerned but at the same time increase the tendency for rancidity in the body. Perhaps this explains why enormous investments in treating illness have neither resulted in a significant increase in life expectancy nor in improving the quality of life. However, more and more investigative science points to the role of diet in the treatment of a whole host of illnesses.

As far back as 1978, England's Peter Mitchell won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry as a result of his work into the significance of co-enzyme Q10 for energy production in the cellular system. Now the substance is available in inexpensive pure form that has both stimulated medical research and made it possible for everyone to take the substance as a dietary supplement. However, we should not just grab the first Q10 product we see because there are difference in the bioavailability of different products. For example one needs to take much larger doses of Q10 in a granulated form than if it is available dissolved in oil in a soft capsule. Tablets have no positive effect.

Danish pharmacist Malene Weis at the Danish College of Pharmacy and other pharmacists from the state University in Copenhagen tested 4 different types of Q10 on a number of volunteers. The researchers measured the amount of Q10 in the bloodstream over a period of 96 hours after the volunteers had been given a single dose of 100mg. The one which was shown to be absorbed best by the body was one in which Q10 was dissolved in Soya oil contained in a soft gel capsule. Thus it was this Q10 which was statistically shown to have better bioavailability. The three others used had :

o Q10 dissolved in Soya bean oil

o lecithin or polysorbate 80

o Q10 powder in a hard gelatine tablet

Toxic symptoms or side effects have never been observed even after long term intakes at high doses.

One interesting study shows the levels of Q10 in the bloodstream of people given Q10 as a dietary supplement for a twelve month period. Four products were used and 21 people recruited. The absorption rates varied widely between the products but in all cases the Q10 disappeared quickly from the body after the study. Food supplements need to be taken on a continuous basis.
